IFPI announces "Global Release Day"...starting this summer, new music on FRIDAYS
 

Unless you're tracking very closely on the music industry, this news might get you off guard:

Beginning this summer, the release day for new music will be aligned internationally to FRIDAYS. That's right - not Tuesday, in the middle of the week - but Friday, at the start of the weekend.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, or the IFPI, the global arm of recorded music worldwide, has announced that the new international release day for new music is going to be on Fridays, not Tuesdays. • "Release days currently vary from one country to another, causing frustration for consumers when music fans in other parts of the world can access new releases before them"
• "The move to an aligned global release day will also reduce the risk of piracy by narrowing the gap between release days in different countries"
• "From summer 2015, new albums and singles will be released at 00:01 local time on Fridays"

I'm surprised at this news, and I'm not sure how people will respond. But Friday...that's the start of the weekend, right? This change to Friday is, just, very significant. We've been too familiar with Tuesday releases (or Wednesdays in Japan time), now all of a sudden we're going to have to cope about releasing music on Fridays rather than Tuesdays or other days.
