A tiny gripe about "tsuki ni shizumu"...

If I hear the title translated as "Sinking Moon" one more time I'm gonna puke. It was translated into chinese like this (OFFICIALLY even!! GAH!) and has been translated into english like this numerous times. But that's NOT what "tsuki ni shizumu" freaking means!!

"ni" is a preposition meaning "into", "by means of", or "in". The word that comes before it is what the subject is "in" or what "means" are being used. Short and sweet:

tsuki = moon
ni = in
shizumu = to sink

The title is "Sinking Into the Moon".

Anyone who knows VERY basic japanese can figure that out. Why don't more people accept the accurate translation of the title?? I mean, Kagari's funeral is just that. She's in the boat, sinking into the reflection of the moon on the water. Kagari sinks into the moon and then is reborn as the psych patient with the bad dreams.

Sinking into the moon = rebirth. VERY significant title.

There's no moon that sinks ever anywhere in the whole movie. BUT there is a girl Sinking Into The Moon.

Anyone here with a website that calls it "Sinking Moon", go change it. We must spread around the accurate translation. Quickly.

That's interesting! It's so obvious after you explain it, but for some reason I could never make the connection before. Thanks for clarifying!

I'd always thought of it as "Drowning in the Moon" myself... I guess that was before I actually watched the movie, lol.

But, like japanese and chinese there are lots of words that canīt be translated into proper english cause our languages were "created" a looooong time before english came to :P So maybe the translators was just some newbs or they were too lazy to translate it properly ^^

Endlessoul 19th July 2005 01:47 PM

yeah~after watchin' the movie I think "sinking into the moon" is a better translation...

ohsixthirty 19th July 2005 01:49 PM

thats the translation i've always heard most actually..."sinking into the moon." it sounds way better than the alternative anyhow. :)

Delirium-Zer0 19th July 2005 04:41 PM

touchedstar: You're lucky, lol XD

the quiet fox: See? You didn't even have to see the movie to know it! Like i said, BASIC japanese. Mleh.

nick, thank you for changing it ^_^
