Koda Kumi: most-watched female performer in Kouhaku
 

More stats on the recent Kohaku Uta Gassen (Red-White Song Battle) on NHK. The New Year's Eve song spectacular features red and white teams, those being the lucky new Year colors. The white team were this year's winners, and a particularly out of tune SMAP rendition of their latest single "Triangle" pulled in the night's highest rating of 48.6%. But the red team act that got the highest audience rating, and got the audience's pulse racing, was sexy songstress Koda Kumi (photo, 23), who managed 47.2%. Probably because she promised to go bra-less, something that would have been unheard of before NHK started pulling out the stops to reverse the show's - and the network's - dramatic slide in popularity. Koda is called "ero kakkoii," which translates as "erotic cool." And that pretty acurately sums up her often semi-naked, hip grinding style that mimics US female R&B and hip hop acts. Her nearest rival for the red team's ratings crown was "sexy" rival Gorie, actually comedian Gori in drag, with 47%.

Speaking of her, Koda Kumi and Gorie had a pretty funny segment with both of them wearing kimono, it was very cute. Koda introduced herself first and Gorie pushed her out of the way. Koda then asked the announcers who looked better in a kimono: herself or Gorie (Gorie, of course, made funny interjections) and this was a lead-in to the next performer who the announcers said trumped them both. Koda saying, "We lost!" was adorable.

I think Koda was in high spirits and was very naturally amusing throughout the show. Her reaction at the end when the White team was named the winner was especially funny.

Yep thats not suprising. She deserved all of those people watching her. She's worked hard the past year.

she performed a medley of Cutie Honey / Butterfly. I don't think she looked or did anything outrageously sexy this time. She had on a top which left her back bare and a big frilly skirt which she took off on Butterfly revealing shorts matching her top.

it was a good performance , but I wish she'd perform live something else besides those two songs for a change. She's performed both of those songs several times live already and the coreography is always mostly the same too. I guess she was playing it safe for Kouhaku tho.

My tought, too. I mean, she's always captalizing at her boobs: with giants billboards in Shibuya where's she's braless; in award shows with big clevages; appearing topless in lots of photos in her secret album; without a bra in her best album; saying she'll be braless in Kouhaku. She use her boobs to sell albums and when people get tired of her boobs... will they get tired of her music?

Ayu don't have good ratings at Kouhaku =|. The only time she was among in the 10 highest-ratings was in her first Kohaku (1998-1999, I guess).
