Timbaland accused of stealing from a Finnish musician

Not sure if you've heard about it, but it looks pretty nasty.

In January 2007, several news sources reported that Timbaland was alleged to have plagiarized several elements (both motifs and samples) in the song "Do It" on the 2006 album Loose by Nelly Furtado without giving credit or compensation.[1][2][3][4]
The claimed original track, entitled "Acidjazzed Evening", is a 4 channel Amiga module composed by Finnish demoscener Janne Suni (a.k.a. Tempest). [5] The song won first place in the Oldskool Music competition at Assembly 2000, a demoparty held in Helsinki, Finland in the year 2000. [6] According to Scene.org, the song was uploaded to their servers the same year, long before the release of the song by Furtado. The song was later remixed (with Suni's permission) by Norwegian Glenn Rune Gallefoss (a.k.a. GRG) for the Commodore 64 in SID format - this is the version which was later allegedly sampled for "Do It". It was added to the High Voltage SID Collection on December 21, 2002.[7]

A video which claims to show proof of the theft was posted to YouTube on January 12, 2007.[8] Another video was posted to YouTube on January 14, 2007, claiming Timbaland also stole the tune a year earlier for the ringtone Block Party, one of several that were sold in the United States in 2005. [9]

It's a real shame since I liked Nelly's "Do It" a lot, I think it's one of the best tracks on the album "Loose" and I was waiting eagerly for it to become a single and recieve a video. As for the issue itself, I think it's not just "sampling", like many people on the internet respond to the controversy, becouse Timbaland didn't credit or paid royalties to the original author. Yes, there are millions of unauthorized samples out there that people can pick to their compositions, but - even if you don't know who made it, if you conciously decide to use it without bothering to find the author to pay him a credit, you risk that you might get cought one day.

Now, Timbaland should just pay proper royalties to the author, that's my opinion. He didn't know him back when he was making the track, but now he knows who the author is. He got cought. No matter how much struggle would he have to go through to find the author back then, he should have done it - or take the risk of unauthorised use. As we see, he took the easier path.

I'm not for seeing any kind of conflict between Timbaland and Janne Suni, they should settle the case with Timbaland paying him at least a written and spoken credit and an apology.

Mad_Cactuar 22nd January 2007 09:21 AM

Well, he should now pay royalties and not cause a fight or sue or anything. I think he didn't know who to credit in the first place. But it would have been better for his image if he credited the author by even adding "unknown" in the songwriting credits or whatever.

..:Hot:Like:Wow:.. 22nd January 2007 09:27 AM

He should just pay cause if he makes a fuss out of it, it will completely destroy his credibility.

Halla 22nd January 2007 09:38 AM

I heard about this , it got big headlines on the tabloids here the other day.

I think it's really embarrasing for timbalands reputation if this grows to a big story in the US media too , seeing how his production talent has gotten him a lot of praise recently with Nellys & Justins excellent albums.

truehappiness 22nd January 2007 10:04 AM

Yeah, and also supposedly "My Love" was also somewhat plagiarized from some other obscure musician.

TALULU 29th January 2007 09:06 PM

yes I discovered a steal to Timbaland with banjo to this song: at 0:34min to this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JolbRVX3sk4
with he song: sexy back > justin timberlake

what do you think? stollen or not?

bondingo 30th January 2007 02:20 AM

Wow, that's slightly shocking. I wouldn't have expected that. Do It is a great song, but the original composer definitely needs to be credited. I can't believe that Timbaland would steal music without crediting. Not like I know the guy, but such a renowned producer doing something like that is pretty bad.

explodingbird 30th January 2007 06:25 AM

It happens so much these days or is said to happen so much these days (I mean, it seems nowadays anyone can make these claims) I never know when to believe it. I'll still enjoy the songs, but... credit's due, Timbo.

emi♡ 30th January 2007 06:28 AM

wow. How horrible. This really makes us look so bad, omg, but hey, yay for international recognition of the talent in other countries!

Kodayumi 30th January 2007 09:47 AM

im surprised.

that's a horrible thing to do XD

theprojectzero 30th January 2007 09:53 AM

OMG! I swear that bloody Timbaland steal sume music sound from Utada's Exdous too. He stole Utada's reinvented digital music. Dun't know howna explain this. I think he's a bag, but i like his music, he's good!

I wish he'll bloody feature Utada on his new album! Better!

HAHAHA!!! TIMBALAND YOU'RE GOIN' DOWN! :laugh

Ayumi-Yummi 30th January 2007 01:52 PM

eeek for T! I love his work (w/ Missy = Flawless!), but he needs to be careful. I remember a song he produced from years back used samples from a musician's voice w/o credit ~ The song was big too [By artist Truthhurts...ring a bell?!].

theprojectzero 30th January 2007 02:49 PM

^*Cough* Off topic as it sound.

I adore your avatar. Hot stuff! (So funny to laugh at! That face!)

Aisha_Angel 30th January 2007 03:14 PM

I don't like him all that much. He's actually annoying to me. I heard a rumor just last week about Justin Timberlake stealing some girls song which just happens to be "My Love". He basically filled in spaces with his own words in the song and kept the chorus exactly the same from my understanding. Anyway the girl has a myspace page and everybodys saying she should sue. I don't own or have listened to JTs album but I know Timbaland produced that one too. So if that rumor is true the suing charges would go to whoever wrote his version of the song and whoever composed the music for it.

But yeah, that's all I know about what I just typed. Now this other thing...he has to be copying these people because you can't just repeatedly do this OVER & OVER AGAIN and NOT be claiming the same excuse or playing the role of the innocent lamb. But I dunno, if he stole these peoples songs he's in for some hell because you just can't take a persons work and not compensate or give credit to them for it. Even if they aren't world famous.

extepan 30th January 2007 04:02 PM

there are so many songs in the world, and it is clearly understandable that a song may be similar to another in some respects.

Terri 30th January 2007 04:34 PM

I wouldn't doubt that.

ohsixthirty 30th January 2007 04:47 PM

too bad for timbaland, i liked the original better. sounds similar though. eh...but why would he be dumb enough to intentionally rip someone else off? its not like he would honestly expect it to fly, at least i hope he wouldn't be that naive.

Similar in some respects? Have you seen the videos? It's not similarity, the original piece is simply sampled into Nelly's song, as well as the ringtone.

theprojectzero 1st February 2007 03:19 PM

I say, Timbaland is too ashame to give credit to the original composer cause people will know that he's dumb or sumething! But i still like his music and i would like him to credit to those original composer, f'bastard!

By the way, boys and girls, time to drop your pants! Look at this!

Utada might be in it, but i doubt it! Timbaland have no faith in her!

Marquez 1st February 2007 03:30 PM

Haha.. I read about this from one forum on Finnish music site. I thought it was a winner song from last year's Assembly, but it was more old song than I thought. They was talking about that should "Tempest" bring an action against Timbaland or should they do teamwork. :P

Here's the whole original song.. if someone hasn't posted it yet.

I think it would be cool if that kind of producer thinks that my music sounds so good that he could use it. :P ... I don't like his music though..
