do western&asian artists inspire each other?
 

I was going around some shops today and noticed this album there. XD well, not looking properly I thought for a sec it was A BEST II.

I think it looks quite quite similar. And no, I am not trying to start some ''that person copied that person!!!11111'' kind of thread, what I actually wonder about is if Jlo, and maybe other big artists keep an eye on asian artists such as Ayu? Like maybe they inspire each other from a distance, since I doubt the ''big western artists'' know Ayu or other big asian stars in real life.

So what do you think, coincidence about similar covers in western music world and asian music world or do both worlds keep an eye on each other (concerning fashion, music, album covers etc)?

If anyone feels this thread is unimportant or w/e then feel free to remove.

I think it is true that artists look all over for inspiration and I think that it is quite likely that someone may be inspired by Ayu. Certainly record companies look for the next big thing or the next sound, no music comes from a vacum and every artist is inspired by what is around them.

As far as those two particular releases go (A BEST 2 and Como ana una mujer), I think they were being prepared at almost the same time, so I don't believe anyone took anything from anyone else.

As for asian music, there's surely tones of inspiration, I mean, the Japanese (and thus rest of Asia, I believe) learned of all sorts of various musical styles through Americans... J-pop was inspired by western pop music... J-urban - pretty obvious. I'm sure lots of asian artists are trying to imitate western performers - their music, appearance and attitude.

The thing is, it doesn't require the performer itself for a connection to be made - performers get suggestions, ideas from photographers, stylists and such, and these people are the ones who often dig for inspiration outside their borders, the ones who can get inspired, and the ones who end up being the actual reason behind certain decisions. Thus, a performer might end up with an act that looks familiar to someone else's, even if he/she hasn't seen it with their own eyes even once.

Definitely, western and asian artists inspire each other. Mainstream Japanese music now is practically completely Westernized; pop and rock originated from the West. The only un-Western-inspired music I'd say Japan has now is enka or traditional folk music or something. As for covers and image and such, I think inspiration goes both ways...then again, some things are just trendy and modern.

And as for that cover in particular, I agree with what ayu cake said. It's a typical shot IMO.

For sure, except the Koreans and Chinese take it one step further sometimes by outright plagarism.

Isn't that a bit harsh to be so selective? I'm sure that Japanese people are capable of plagiarism too. :rolleyes

I think most artists just tend to go with whatever style is new or "the trend" at the moment so artists are bound to be inspired by similar works...

I agree and disagree with that. Some artists are fully in control of their career, like Ayu is. Like Madonna, I'm sure she doesn't get her ideas for concert costumes and PVs from her staff. I think it all comes from what she likes, from what she's seen. Another example is M.I.A., she's Saudi-Arabian but she was raised in London. Her music has a real island-reggae feel and she's traveled to Jamaica and other Caribbean places for inspiration. So I think the artist is inspired by other cultures and people too.

ANYWAY. Sure. There's inspiration between both... "worlds". I mean, look at Gwen Stefani, she's obsessed with A Bathing Ape, as is Kanye West.

Well I think that covers a lot .... my most recent discovery was the choreography of beyonce's ring the alarm at some MTV MAs and Kuu-chan's interlude between Selfish and Crazy 4 U at her Live Tour 2006~2007 ~Second Session~ ... some parts of the choreo are really likewise ... I think the choregraph has been inspired by beyonce's choreo and decided to bring some parts of it in her show ...

^it made sense to me. Idolizing is pretty common in every culture.

I don't know, I think Beyonce's Ring the Alarm dance break was inspired by Amuro Namie's tour one. Here's the video, it looks really similiar.

Well, Beyoncé stole the Ring the Alarm routine from Janet Jackson! D: Sadly, I don't think Beyoncé or her choreographer(s) have been inspired by Namie or by her choreographer(s).
