What do your classmates think of Ayu?
Hi there!:shihi
Well, I wanna know if some other people have the same problem: in the 2nd Class of High School some girls (you know, those populair-I-am-everything-and-i-am-much-better-than-you girls) asked if they could listen to my mp3 (which was full of Ayu...). Of course, I said yes... And when the bell went they said: that's weird, very weird music. And a few months later I said to someone: well, you don't wanna know what I have for music on my mp3. and one of those populair girls said: YES, We do know! You have sort of Chinese one on it! Actually, I don't think it's with Ayu only... I think it's with all J-Pop and Asia pop... So my point is: they don't understand it... They only like American music and they think everyone loves American music and they don't know about the J-Pop, C-Pop, K-Pop ... Anyone every been true this before? |
Well i actually discovered ayu because of one of my classmates. She listens to tonnes of j-pop and k-pop but now she has fully changed to visual kei lol... Anyway, she used to send me sample of what she listens to like miyavi, gackt, hikki and ayu.
So yeah, that's how i discovered her. But i guess she's popular eveywhere, regularly appearing on chinese magazines and such. My friends actually like her too (since i go to a school with 97% asians) XD! And yes, asian music/dramas dominates at my school lol... |
In high school I listened to Ayumi a lot and people knew that I did. I kept a picture of her on my binder and everyone would ask who she was. Since I was fairly involved at my high school, I also was able to push having one of Ayumi's quotes painted on our school wall, along with many other quotes from other people. Also, I was in charge of creating a promotional video for our school and used Ayumi's music on it. People were impressed, so that's good.
Good stuff. |
Wow, that's quite postive... :mini

I choose not to disclose that I listen to Ayu, or Japanese music in general. Since I'm not Asian, it usually makes things a lot easier to just keep it under wraps. I'll usually say foreign music/indie, which, isn't exactly a lie. I've only told a few classmates that I've known for a long time that my favorite artist is Ayu. They think it's pretty weird, but they playfully joke. Fortunately, I choose not to associate with people who judge others only on their music 'scene'.

Well my friends know, and they're fine with it now, It doesn't really come up anyway. And if anyone bothers to even ask, I just tell them. I understand some people may find it awkward, but I stops quickly. It's not like you've something to be ashamed or embarressed about, music is music. But I guess it is easier for Asian people to get away with it though. :D

^ No, I didn't mean it like that, well I know that, but other ignorant? people would immediatly think that, and just think that you knew the language so It wouldn't be as awkward for someone who's isn't Asian.

Yeah I know what you people meant, it is easier for Asian people to get away with listening to Asian music, but the underlying reasons for that are not so logical, as already mentioned. I also listen to a lot of heavier stuff, progressive metal/rock and metal, but no one gives me a funny look for listening to "white" music.
|
^I didnt say it was my perception, only people in general who dont listen to asian music, and based on my own experiences. Also, the reason asian get away with listening to "white music" is that that music is all over the world, including asia. This always annoyed me, western music goes all over the world, but the asian never gets farther than asia. People are too ignorant. They just go "ew, chinese music - ching chong".
But oh well, that's not gonna stop me. |

Somebody mentioned the fact which is perfectly true that for most of people Asian music is this chinese dialect ching chang etc :P I'm in college and my classmates know that Ayu is my fav and they don't find it something strange. Maybe at first there were that face expressions you know... like i was a weirdo or sth :P But I have really great school mates and sometimes they even ask me to let them listen to my mp3s xD (which is full of Ayu of course, and some Madonna).

Bleh, I guess it's the same thing all over the world. All Asian people = Chinese. Yellow people. Small. No difference. It's really embarrassing. Hah.
My friends accept my interest (and some of them share it with me) and the whole class of mine knows that I am interested in Japan and Sweden. ^^ I am in gymnasium after all so most of the people have a brain. |

I love my friends, but they are stupid and went all: that's gay music, but it's okay if you're gay. ¬¬
Not everybody can appreciate art. They just care for boobs being shaked around to 50 Cent and friends. |
