A southern Japanese island. 'Shima-uta' means 'island song', and if you're familiar with artists like Natsukawa Rimi, Atari Kousuke, Ohyama Yurika, Anna Sato, RIKKI, Yanawaraba, or Ikue Asazaki, then you should have an idea of the musical and vocal style. Her music features a blend of pop, rock and traditional folk and world elements. It's difficult to pin her to one genre. I'm going to copy and paste a blip I wrote for wiki.theppn.org here: Hajime Chitose is a Japanese singer who possesses a unique and recognizable style of singing, which is rooted in her background of traditional 'island-song' style singing of her hometown. At a young age she had won numerous folk-music awards for her singing and was even approached by a several record companies. However, she turned down these offers, opting instead to study to persue a career as a beautician. An allergic reaction to the chemicals in the products caused her to drop-out of beautician school and seriously consider a musical career. She released two small albums with the independent label ATSUGUA in 2001. Her first major single through Epic Records was (Wadatsumi no Ki) in 2002. The single reached the #1 spot on the charts, and sold just under 850,000 units, making it the #3 best selling single of 2002 in Japan. (right behind Utada Hikaru's 'traveling', and Ayumi Hamasaki's 'H') While her popularity has slowed some, her musical efforts haven't. She is about to release her fourth major album, 'Cassini', and her tenth single 'Hotaru Boshi' in July. She is also a part of the super group 'Fukumimi', which features such artists as Suga Shikao, Yamazaki Masayoshi, Kyoko, Araki Yuko, COIL, and Sukima Switch. Discography Spoiler:

I think her vocal style is very distinct, and I can see if it's a bit much for some people. it's hard to describe, it's like she fluctuates her voice or something. or she sounds like she needs to clear her throat lol :o
but I like her music. her singing is very expressive & enjoy the folk/ethnic elements and I'm a big fan of unique vocal talents. I really like the new single "Hotaruboshi", but my fave song by her is "Kataritsugu Koto" :yes |

She seems like a really low-key artist. Even when she releases an album, I never see much talk about it. Shame - she's so great.

wasn't she the one who sang the first ending theme to the BLOOD+ anime? i heard it on TV a long time ago, lol. i just never looked into any of her other music.
