What's the meaning of this quote?

Okay, this is really irritating me.

I feel silly asking this question: What's the meaning behind one of Ayu's quotes which reads, "I don't have dreams. How can I say it? I myself am a dream." I especially feel silly because every fan seems to just fall head-over-heels for this quote. I even asked my mother if she had any idea what it could mean, and she was stumped as well.

I know it's hard being that it's translated from one language to another, but what does it mean? (:laugh) My mother and I have a thought that it could be, like, "I'm living the dream."

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :D

Yea that's how I see it too, she doesn't have dreams because she is currently living it.

Delirium-Zer0 10th October 2008 11:48 PM

Yeah, that's basically all it is. I have no idea why ayu fans go so bonkers over that quote, honestly. It's not particularly profound or even all that concise, but for whatever reason everyone loves that quote. But don't worry, there's not some hidden meaning that you're missing.

ayupan90 10th October 2008 11:54 PM

does anyone have the original quote? maybe that will show the meaning (if there is one)

xLitax 11th October 2008 12:01 AM

Hm... I always thought it meant that she was... a dream. Almost as if she herself were so uh... "creative" or "imaginative" that it what somewhat like she was in a permanent dream. But, the aforementioned meanings are a lot simpler and make much more sense so I was probably thinking too much about it.

Ani_C 11th October 2008 12:34 AM

Lucky b.... xDDD It's such a bold statement, but in a sense it can be taken as a humble one. It's good if you have reached your dreams I guess. Whatever :laugh

pommy48 11th October 2008 01:06 AM

hmm i just thought that ayu doesn't have a dream~ she IS living her dream? @_@ idk

Chibi_Venus 12th October 2008 07:24 PM

Ah, a cloud has finally evaporated from my mind. Thank you all so much for your help! :D

At the end of the last paragraph.

I never thought about it that way! Interesting indeed. It makes much sense that ayu has no dreams, because she's living one.

Well, I always thought about it more that ayu's a dream to others rather than to herself. As in, that even if she feels down and goes through rough and sad times, she shows a smile to her fans. Maybe this could also apply to fashion and concerts. Creating a dreamworld.

Though as I look at it, both explanations are similar in a way.

ren0210989 13th October 2008 12:01 AM

i think she ment it more like, this whole world is one big dream, or something like that

emi♡ 13th October 2008 12:47 AM

I don't think so, I think it's very straightforward...

fans always go crazy over ayu quotes...and none of them are really that profound...the best ones are from her lyrics.

Chibi_Venus 13th October 2008 04:37 AM

^ I find that her lyrics are better than her quotes, too.

This quote is still indeed strange, but I love hearing everyone's comments on it. ;)

kirei_ayumi 13th October 2008 05:25 AM

I always thought that when ayu says, "I myself am a dream", that this whole music career was not her original goal or destiny, like something that just falls in your lap and you don't know how to accept it, so basically this career is a living dream for her.

SolarAngel 13th October 2008 06:43 AM

I don't think ayu says things to sound profound or whatever. She's just answering interview questions. For songs, she probably reflects on them, so the lyrics come out as being very meaningful. I agree with the interpretation haha...

Mitkki 14th October 2008 06:11 PM

She's not living her dream, but everyone else's. Ayu never aspired to become a professional singer anyway. She's a dream in the sense that others say "wow i want to be like that." So she's not living the dream but more like a dream (of someone else). This again comes back to the whole ayu vs. ayumi hamasaki image complex.

That's a really good point.

mimika 14th October 2008 11:02 PM

first of all, i don't think this quote applies anymore

ayu said this back during 2000 when she did the Times magazine interview

her state of mind is very different now compared to than

back than, I think she meant that...she doesn't have dreams because she realize there's nothing to dream about, something like her, being a dream of other ppl (i.e. something others can only dream of becoming and achieveing in dreams) is actually a product manufactured by AVEX, she is a product, a product of dream...therefore dreams in today's world are only a commercial product made for people to purchase...since she saw through this commercial aspect of the so-called dream, she felt that she can't really have dreams because dreams are really non-existant

but now, i think her perspective changes, you can see from her lyrics and from her interviews, and from her daily actions and words...i think she has see things around her differently and she has hope again...remember back than most of ayu's songs are unhappy, hopeless and despair..but now...she has happy songs and talks about tomorrow and actually realizing dreams...

I always thought that she considered herself to be the person who people can dream about because of her image, role as a role model and how she is a fashion leader.

Chibi_Venus 16th October 2008 02:16 AM

Lots of good points here. Mimika, I have to say that I agree with you on how it can be interpreted differently today since Ayu has changed within those few years. It's certainly interesting to have seen her grow (and even continue slowly today).

AyumiBest 16th October 2008 10:04 AM

I never really thought about that quote. I don't go like "OMG! AYU IS LIKE SO AMAZING!" when I read/hear it. To tell you the truth, I actually wondered what it meant and I never thought about it till now. =P

I agree with Mimika...her post has good points. =P
