Oricon vs. Billboard

Honestly...

I've been following Ayu's single streak (since the album one is gone lol) and I've been so excited that she has such a good chance!

But I've been thinking...
Billboard (the US charts) is sooo accurate because it constantly changes to accomadate the changes of what determines how popular a song is. So now they include digital downloads and less for physical single sales. But...
Oricon is still solely based on physical sales. In fact, it doesn't look like it'll change. So obviously all these rankings are slightly flawed right?

So if suddenly they decide it's not accurate anymore and more to a more reliable chart or whatnot... what happens to all these records? Especially ayus LOL like... does any one know what I mean?

What happens from here on? Is still following solely physical sales enough?

Well....@_@ Billboard Japan....

polka-dot-jewel 27th October 2009 08:00 AM

Well, obviously physical sales are going to be less on the Billboard US, because here in the US, we really don't sell CD singles anymore, and more and more people are just downloading albums now.

I was looking up info about Ayu's singles, and even though they both reached #1, "Sunrise / Sunset" and "Mirrorcle World" only reached #2 on the Billboard Japan charts. I think Billboard JP is pretty new, because I couldn't find any chart info about singles released before MW. lol

Max_ZZZ 27th October 2009 08:52 AM

but i mean when we think of main charts we only consider oricon, but isn't that bad? especially for ayu

zyoeru 27th October 2009 09:04 AM

^ Why is it bad? The mainstream chart is ORICON, so there's no other chart to really consider. :\

TeddyGrahams 27th October 2009 10:57 AM

Not really, I think the billboard Japan Hot 100 starts on a different day for the week than Oricon. One major difference is that hot Japan includes Airplays. And we all know Ayu doesn't get much airplay compared to other artists right? Only Sunrise hit 15 on the hot airplays... Look at Bleeding love hitting number one in Japan... did it even sold any CDs? D:

Both do not include digital downloads anyways.

IMO Billboard can be more accurate when it's about a song popularity...

rakeru 27th October 2009 05:42 PM

Billboard can be misleading about an album's popularity, though. it's good at tracking individual songs, but they count a certain amount of songs digitally bought as a whole album. in the US it's 10, and i'm not sure if it's the same in Japan. 10 songs may be insignificant when it comes to some albums, like MY STORY with 17 tracks.

JackieRos 27th October 2009 09:31 PM

i thought oricon was like the billboard of japan

Crystal_Ageha 27th October 2009 10:59 PM

^ It is. Because Billboard JP isn't nearly as popular.

I think the ORICON charts suck in their counting and organisation, lol. >_> But whatever. I don't care a whole lot about chart rankings and such.

njanjayrp 27th October 2009 11:08 PM

Oricon rarely reflects the actual popularity of a release in the past few years, especially when it comes to singles.

Counting airplays is imo pretty dumb as it doesn't say anything about how popular a song is.

jbrat2219 28th October 2009 07:03 AM

So Oricon tracks sales and Billboard tracks popularity...?

Andrenekoi 28th October 2009 07:07 AM

^Billboard tracks physical sales + downloads + airplay
Oricon tracks physical sales only

asmAyumi1992 30th October 2009 08:28 AM

I prefer oricon style that tracks physical sales only. It shows how popular the artist is.

mcluva420 30th October 2009 08:49 AM

yea billboard, but with a flaw of corruption!! :wtf

Delirium-Zer0 4th November 2009 08:01 AM

The Billboard charts are useless in the USA since record labels pay radio stations to play their songs. The radio stations manipulate the charts by manipulating airplay - Billboard is TRYING to show how popular songs are, but since the industry itself is so corrupt, it's horribly inaccurate.

The Oricon chart's CD sales is far more accurate a gauge of a single's popularity, even if downloads aren't taken into account. There are download charts, and if you look at both the single sales and the downloads, it's very easy to see what songs are popular.

One day, the Oricon single chart will probably be downloads rather than CDs - just like how the charts once counted Vinyl record sales and had to make the transition to CDs later. It happens.

In any case, I doubt ayu's streak will be affected. CD sales in general will fall all together as download numbers rise, it's not like ayu's physical CD sales will dip below everyone else's. Fewer CDs will be produced overall.

I wouldn't worry about it.
