Utada / Whitney

Does anyone find any subtle simmilarities in these songs (I love both):

> Utada - Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - FYI (from Hikki's latest american album "This Is The One")

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kt0P6H5kSqg

> Whitney Houston - Call You Tonight (from Whitney's newest album "I Look To You")

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeVuNhDfROc

I mean, they aren't that simillar or sampling, but I have sort of a simillar feeling when listening to both LOL I can sort of blend Whitney's Call You Tonight Chorus with Utada's MCMrL-FYI verses ahhaha:laugh Wonder why...wondeer if they have the same composer or producers or something...

I'm trying hard to hear what you hear, but I'm not getting it.

ImpactBreaker 1st November 2009 12:18 AM

Well i can personally blend certain parts of both songs together (If I knew how to mix songs I could definitely do a good mash up with both)...maybe because I'm used to listening to both already, I dunno. As I pointed out though, it's not like the song are batlantly simillar or something. It's kinda subtle, but I guess it's a personal thing to me ahahha

They both were produced by Stargate. I didn't remind me of FYI. They both have that piano sound in them.

Polyrhythm 1st November 2009 12:20 AM

They dont sound alike at all :shrug

Were they? :think I know Whitney's was, but FYI too? that would be interesting if it were true. I couldn't really find much info in This Is The One producers (as I don't own the album).

I ended up finding this song that has a simillar part to FIY:

But apparently it also is a sample from the movie soundtrack of MC Mr Lawrence (which I never watched or listened to)

Crystal_Ageha 1st November 2009 12:35 AM

Maybe you mean the beats in both songs have a similar feel..? But then again, 98% of songs have a generic beat that can be compared with other songs in the same genre. :shrug I think I hear what you're talking about, though.

Sundae 1st November 2009 12:48 AM

This is the song it samples from (both FYI and Heart of Asia)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwkuS9FlB7M

But yeah Stargate and Tricky are the only producers names I remember from TITO. Other than Utada of course.

Stargate isn't like Timbaland. I can tell when Timbaland does a song. Stargate songs sound different to me. Though technically you should be able to hear something similar in the music they produce.

ImpactBreaker 1st November 2009 01:12 AM

^ahah true! Timbaland is really obvious in his productions. But well, thanks for the info. I guess that must explain why the simillarities I feel are really subtle, and not picked by everybody. I didn't bring this out of random, because it's been a few weeks since I last listened to TITO songs (they really weren't fresh in my mind). I just happened to be lsiteneing to whitney's new album, and I liked this particular song "Call You Tonight" (and a few others) and while I was lsitening to it, MCMr Lawrence-FYI kept strangely flashing on my mind.

TITANIC 1st November 2009 01:06 AM

before hikki, there was an indonesian/french singer has a similar song like MCML FYI

mcluva420 1st November 2009 02:19 AM

wow, that whitney song is pretty good =D lol
i dont hear much similarities either :shrug

ImpactBreaker 1st November 2009 02:44 AM

I guess the lyrics "I'll call you tonight" and "we're gonna be up all night[...]call me, you know my number" make a conceptual semantic simillarity in my mind as well :laugh

Yeah! I love it!:yes

Polyrhythm 1st November 2009 04:35 AM

Can you point out exactly where you're hearing the similarity?

I'm sorry, I can't point a specific part. As I've said in my first post, there's no sampling and the simillarities are subtle, but I can notice them, because one song evokes in me the memories of the other. Maybe you might catch them if you listen more to "Call You Tonight" or a better quality file of it, if you already were a fan enough of MCMrL-FYI to have it well recorded in your mind. Or maybe you just won't catch it. I'm not the kind of person who likes to go "X copied Y", and I wouldn't be making a thread of simillarities out of random, but unfortunatelly, it's a bit too hard to point out something exactly, because the simillarities are rather diffuse and subtle. Also, I personally believe I'm not going crazy, because out of a thousand music producers in the music industry, I actually picked 2 songs produced by the same person, without knowing it, so that might sorta explain why I got that feeling.

There's also the possibility it is just me though..people react emotionally different to music hehe

Amrai-chan 1st November 2009 12:09 PM

I think I get you. When Call You Tonight starts there's that...sound lol...dewwwww or whatever and then the sounds around 40 seconds. The do do do....and some other parts that are kind of hard to describe. Unless you mean something else. Perhaps the whole Stargate thing might have something to do with it too.

I could see that and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - FYI being mixed together though.

Yeah, those are some elements that adds to the simillarities. And you were able to catch the "mix"ability of both songs as well! :yes

Picaflor 7/4 1st November 2009 07:13 PM

I see what you're talking about. has a similar feel.
