Pronunciation of certain Ayu-related terms

Quite a few questions here so bear with me. ^^

I'm going to be working on a spoken version of Ayu's article @ Wikipedia as part of Wikipedia's spoken articles project, but since audio is much, much harder to edit than text, I need to make sure I get some pronunciations right before I begin.

So 1) how do you pronounce MTRLG? Is it "Material G", "Em-tee-are-ell-gee", or do I read it phonetically (lol).

2) Is Loveppears pronounced "love appears" or "luvpeers"?

3) Is Crea pronounced "cray-uh", "cree-uh", or what?

4) Ayumi Hamasaki × Hello Kitty: is it read "Ayumi Hamasaki ex Hello Kitty", "Ayumi Hamasaki Hello Kitty", "Ayumi Hamasaki and Hello Kitty", or "Ayumi Hamasaki batsu Hello Kitty"? (lol)

5) What about Velfarre? Is it "vel-far" or "vel-fare" rhyming with "welfare"?

6) With her titles that have forward slashes ("/"), do I pronounce it "slash", "and", or nothing? For example, do I pronounce Sunrise/Sunset (Love Is All) as "Sunrise and Sunset Love Is All" or "Sunrise Sunset Love Is All"? Same with Glitter/Fated, do I say "Glitter and Fated" or "Glitter slash Fated" or "Glitter Fated"?

7) And one for you French speakers: Orchestre Lamoureux, do I read it "or-sheh-struh la-moo-rer" or what? If you could post an audio file with you pronouncing it (I'm an American, so I have a horrible French accent lol), that would be really cool, although I know that's asking a lot.

Oh, and could you please provide the official pronunciations, like how they're pronounced in commercials and stuff?

OogoeDiamond 14th November 2009 02:30 AM

6) just Title Title - so for example just Glitter Fated without anything

nanakopy87 14th November 2009 02:39 AM

i believe LOVEPPEARS is love appears and s/s is sunrise sunset

jiarongisme 14th November 2009 02:44 AM

1. Material Girl
2. Love appears
3. Cree-ay

6. e.g. Days/GREEN would be pronounced as Days, Green

Can't help you with the rest sorry.

loveppears pronounced in japanese is same as english pronounciation of love appears.

aura~ 14th November 2009 03:36 AM

I think there's no rules for most of them and everyone has their own way to pronunce...

1) Material Girl

2) Lovepears. here you have a link to download the CM for LOVEppears. ayu says: LOVUPIARS so: LOVE-ppears ^^

http://totalayu.free.fr/cm/Avex%20tr...rs%20Album.mpg (from TOTALAYU)

3) I pronunce CREA... there's a spanish word like that (imperative of create) and I think If someone from Japan read CREA he will say "k(u)-re-a"

here HONDA CREA CM (with ayu) she pronunce CREA as I've said ^^

4) I would go for "Ayumi Hamasaki and Hello Kitty" thouhg I say "A.H par H.K" XD

5) Since it has two "RR" I pronunce it like in spanish, the sound for "r+r" is the spanish "rrrrr" in "carro" XD so I'd pronunce VEL-FA-RRE

but here you have a CM for promoting Velfarre... they say: velfar

6) As others said, Days GREEN nothing in between.

7) I'm not french but I can help a bit: Or-kes-trea la-mu-rox You know, the french "r" from your throat (grrr xd) and the "ea" its not like pronunce e+a but a sound that it's not an "a" nor and "e" but in between XD and the "o" from "rox" i think it's like and open "o" that you have to pronunce opening the mouth like for an "a"

Hope I've been helpful ^^

I don't think you say the x in lamoreux.

And I always said loveppears lol. I just like it better than love appears, it takes longer to say that. I also say M-T-R-L-G. I think that sounds cooler than Material Girl, but what do I know:)

Delirium-Zer0 14th November 2009 05:56 AM

1) MTRLG is really just a logo, when spoken aloud it's read out entirely as "Material Girl."

2) Strictly speaking, it's pronounced "ラブピアーズ (RABUPIAAZU)", which sounds the same as "love appears" in English. Since japanese words always end in either the consonant "nn" or a vowel, the word "love" is pronounced with that extra -u sound at the end, which is pronounced rather like a schwa in english. The "a" at the beginning of the english word "appears" is pronounced the same way, so how the words blend together is really only relevant to its japanese pronunciation. Even if the title was written as "Love Appears" instead of "LOVEppears," English speakers would say it the same way.

3) クレア (KUREA). Closest english approximation would be "CRAY-uh".

4) That x in collaborations, I still have yet to figure out. It's probably pronounced as "と (to)" for "and." I'm really not sure though, i haven't seen enough news reports on TV about collaborations.

5) Neither, actually, it's ヴェルファーレ (VERUFAARE), "Vell-FAR-ay".

6) The commercials never pronounce the slash, they just say the titles.

7) It's kinda like "or-KESTr La-mo-RUH." XD That's tough to write out. lol... but that r in "Orchestre" is just BARELY pronounced, most americans skip it. and the "uh" sound at the end of lamoreux.... it's not quite like that, but that's the closest approximation in english.

Just to note that many Eurobeat songs that mention Velfarre tend to say it like "vell-far".

Embleu 14th November 2009 08:06 AM

Thanks a lot, everyone, much obliged! Deli and walking.proud, you both recommend pronouncing "ch" in Orchestre as "k", but I read on About.com that ch is pronounced "sh" in French? Or does that not apply in this case, like how the letter G in English can be "hard" or "soft" depending on the following vowels? And which is the "preferred" pronunciation of Velfarre? The CM that walking.proud posted pronounces it "vel-far", but the kana Deli posted reads "vel-far-ray", so ... ?

Delirium-Zer0 14th November 2009 08:14 AM

The kana is the official pronunciation - it's the way the creators of the disco pronounce it. Perhaps the non-japanese speakers see the disco's name and pronounce it differently, and since the phrase is in english in the CM, they're using that pronunciation there (although the "re" character is said with very little emphasis, i suppose they could be saying "re" at the end there and it might be nearly inaudible... perhaps, could be, i dunno. lol) ...but since the creators of the disco are japanese, I'm treating the katakana that's displayed everywhere as the official pronunciation.

And yeah, the ch is usually pronounced like sh in french, but because of the origin of this particular word, it's pronounced as a "k" in this case. Kinda like how in english, "ch" is usually pronounced like "ch" as in "chat" or "check," but in "orchestra" it's pronounced like a "k" as well.

So 1) how do you pronounce MTRLG? Is it "Material G", "Em-tee-are-ell-gee", or do I read it phonetically (lol).

I pronounce "Em-tee-are-ell-gee"

2) Is Loveppears pronounced "love appears" or "luvpeers"?

I pronounce "luvpeers"

3) Is Crea pronounced "cray-uh", "cree-uh", or what?

Oh god, it's difficult. I read it in the italian way
so it's C-r-ay-uh

6) With her titles that have forward slashes ("/"), do I pronounce it "slash", "and", or nothing? For example, do I pronounce Sunrise/Sunset (Love Is All) as "Sunrise and Sunset Love Is All" or "Sunrise Sunset Love Is All"? Same with Glitter/Fated, do I say "Glitter and Fated" or "Glitter slash Fated" or "Glitter Fated"?

No slash pronounciated. So Glitter fated.
