iTunes and tax

I didn't know if this should go in chat or gen. music... but anyways

what dictates wether or not you have to pay sales tax on iTunes downloads? I suppose this applies more to US residents... just because tax laws vary by country, and state, which brings me to my next comment. I looked a little into it online, and it seems that a common answer is that you pay the tax if you have a physical Apple store in your state. But there's been an Apple store in NC for years now, and i never had to pay tax until what seems like the turn of 2010. (I have a reciept from 12/22/09 with no tax, and one from 1/7/10 with tax, so I can only assume this came along with the new year) So, whats up? As if they weren't already cheating thier customers out of enough money???

I'm pretty sure sales tax depends on the regulations of your state...

according to their site
Quote:

SALES TAX

iTunes Store transactions will include sales tax based on the bill-to address and the sales tax rate in effect at the time your transaction is completed. If the sales tax rate for the billing address changes before the purchased or rented (as applicable) digital content is downloaded, the new tax rate in effect at the time of download will apply. We will only charge tax in states where digital goods are taxable. No customers are eligible for tax exemptions for transactions made on the iTunes Store.
So yeah, I would guess that it depends on the state laws.

I looked around, and it looks like North Carolina levied a new tax on things that are....uh what this site calls "digital property" ("Sales tax on online purchases, digital downloads of items like songs and movies...") effective Jan 1, 2010, so that's probably what happened....looks like NC has a bunch of new taxes this year in fact...so...if you notice stuff costing more...thats probably why lol

Apple can't swindle munny out of customers by raising their own sales taxes lol It's all done by each state.

I haven't had to pay tax yet, but it does seem as though iTunes loves to cheat people out of money >.<

ok.. thanks... I gues... I'm just still really pissed.

And don't EVEN get me started on iTunes and thier rediculous greed. I swear if the Inferno was re-written to reflect today's time, Apple and Steve Jobs would be right there in the fourth circle pushin' boulders.
