Humming 7/4...?

I really adore this song and it wasn't until I was in the car the other day when it came on and I looked at the "7/4" part of the title for quite some time and suddenly realized that it could possibly be July 4th seeing as July is the 7th month on the calendar. So is there any confirmation about the "7/4" being July 4th?

~angel*ayumi~ 11th March 2010 09:58 PM

It means the time/beat of the song, Itīs a seven-four-time.
(Dunno if I found the correct english words)
It has nothing to do with a certain date XD

LOL thanks, it just had me wonder after I was sitting in the car thinking about it FOREVER...lol I just thought it kinda made sense...although July 4th is more of an important date for the US. Thanks for the info!

I always wondered about the 7/4... I assumed it was a time signature, but the song isn't played in 7/4.

She actually says that there are seven beats in four counts here.

that seems weird. to have 7 beats in one measure. why not 8? lol I never understood time signatures. haha.

Ayu said that, but the song only has two measures (between the verse and chorus) that are in 7/4. The intro is in 6/4, and the verses alternate between 4/2 and 4/4 (it could be officially written as 4/4 the whole way through, but it sounds like 4/2), and the chorus is in 4/4. The song skips around ALOT, I love it.

People say that a 7/4 signature is rather difficult, that's why few if any big pop artists ever use a 7/4 signature in their songs, but I think in saying that, it fits the song's lyrics really well. In the song it says a bit about going your own way, and so maybe that's where this signature goes in. That even if it's difficult, it's one way to go, and it can be fun. At least I sometimes saw it this way.

ah i see better. . .lol. i was like conducting in my head and i was like this time sig is definitely not consistent with 7/4 and i swear i just played 7/4 for allcoutny band blah blah

well i see know . . jumps around :)

ayupan90 12th March 2010 10:19 PM

omg I totally don't understand this stuff lol never realised there was so much to music XD

Wow, thank you so much for defining the time signature for each part of the song! lol I'm a music major, but rhythm and I do nottt get along (:laugh), so I never would've been able to depict where the 7/4 part was LOL!

You just gotta love songs that have ever-changing meters. :P

Now, how do you conduct in 7/4...? Haha just kidding :D

(Ooh, I should not have come to this thread. I'm a sucker for anything music theory-related now. XD)

Picaflor 7/4 13th March 2010 08:57 PM

^ I still can't figure out time signatures. my teachers tell me the top number is for how many counts in a measure and the bottom is idk. whenever a music teacher talks about it, they're always like "oh you don't need to worry about the bottom number". but 7 beats in a measure? that's weird. :/ its like 1-2-3-4 1-2-3. what about the 4th? just empty space? haha

primavera♥ 13th March 2010 10:35 PM

^when the bottom number changes from 4 then i have to ask what the hell im counting in XD then i can count (maybe)

when directors go past 5/4 i get lost. . . there arms are like swinging randomly to me. its just like. forget about it. ill never be drum major in marching band

hachiroku 14th March 2010 11:14 AM

i have to ask this here. Yesterday i watched older PV:s and example in Humming 7/4 there is guitarist who is not yo-chan :) Who is this guitarist? I thought Yo-chan has been Ayus guitarist always..... i also watched GAME and there were 2 different guitarist...

:) Sorry to ask this here , but maybe someone can help

Delirium-Zer0 14th March 2010 05:10 PM

The bottom number is what type of note gets the count. ... 2 means a half-note gets the beat, 4 means a quarter note gets the beat, 8 means an eighth note gets the beat, etc.

It's almost ALWAYS four - usually if a measure deviates from that, it's to reflect a proportionate tempo change from the rest of the song (like how in parts of the Humming 7/4 verses, the notes are longer and more sweeping - those would be 2 on the bottom maybe sorta kinda)... I don't think I've ever seen a whole song written outside of an x/4 time signature.

Picaflor 7/4 14th March 2010 05:55 PM

^that kind of makes sense. so it explains what each measure consists of? like if the signature is 4/2 then there's 4 beats in a measure for the song, and in each measure, each beat consists of half notes? if so then i think i got the hang of it.

Delirium-Zer0 14th March 2010 06:42 PM

Yup! :) You've pretty much got it. :)

waterballoon 14th March 2010 08:05 PM

7/4 = 7 crotchets in one bar.
