It's obvious he did it for the publicity and to build himself up. Accusing Ayu of lip-synching, then saying most Japanese singers lip-synch, and then turning it into a "compliment" to brush it aside. Brushed aside, turned into a "compliment", or not, it's been said, it's controversial, it's what people hear, and it can't be taken back.

Quote:
"Where do you have people who can dance and sing so well at the same time"?
Lots of places. If every singer stood completely still when they sang fast, energetic songs, that would be boring.

Quote:
"I realize there's many concerts in Japan, whereby the singers will lip-synch"
Really? Which ones? Have you been to any? (I realize that, yes, some artists do lip-synch, but he's just making such a broad generalization)

Quote:
"But the Japanese do things perfectly - Ayu's dancers even cover up for her"
The first part is such a snide remark and the second part...how exactly do they cover up her singing?

It's a publicity stunt with a really shakey argument that, despite that, will stirr up controversy anyway, and that's what irks me.
