Reading from this interview ( http://homepage2.nifty.com/morimasa/rockin.html), I get the feeling that they must have been close. After all, her only family members were her grandma and mom. Her family situation reminds me of my own, I was raised by my grandma primarily but I had a close (almost friend/sisterlike) relationship with my mom. However, this is all based on judgement. Well her lyrics for one thing. (a song for xx is about her Mother) Also in early interviews almost everything she said about her mother was in a negative light. She went from saying that she learned growing up that she did not want to be like her Mother, to now in the CNN interview saying that her Mother is her idol. Also in her radio show for All Night Nippon in '98 when she is talking about her and how neglectful she was, Ayu comments on how these things didn't bother her and such and such - yet if you've heard the show and not just read the transcript, you can clearly tell from her voice that she is crying as she says this.
