i think the younger, more recently debuted batch of JE groups (like KAT-TUN, KANJANI8, & NEWS) are advised not to have a girlfriend because their fanbases are younger, thus more crazy fangirls will have the oppurtunity to hurt them (whether it be physical or spreading rumors online).
Ayu & Nagase didn't really have this problem because Nagase was already an established idol when they announced their relationship (TOKIO had their debut in '94). Ayu has a good reputation as well, which is my reason why JE didn't really have a problem with Ayu.
