Kataklysm, Carcass, In Flames, Hate Eternal, Death, Opeth, Lamb of God, Morbid Angel, Nile, Arch Enemy, Cannibal Corpse, etc. Death metal has some of the most technical guitar playing and and drumming outside of prog/prog-metal. But most people can't get into it because of the vocal style and the odd time signatures.

Hey, another deathmetal fan! Great. Some awesome bands you named there. I love Nile, Arch Enemy and Cannibal Corpse too. I'm not such a fan of the 'Göteborg' sound of bands like In Flames though. My favorite deathmetal is mostly located on labels like Relapse. Relapse has got such awesome bands.
Many ppl seem to think that deathmetal is uninspired, not-technical and simple. Which is totally wrong, because it is terribly technical. I love it. It may be confused with grindcore, because grindcore is kinda simple and may, to a newbie, sound like death metal. And about the vocals, I love grunts. That Dying Fetus singer has an awesome grunt.
