I saw Utada's album well enough when I was here. She would have her own cardboard cutout with a shelf of CDs in it, whenever I walked into some record stores. I think for an entirely new artist with an ethnicity that went against the mainstream popularity, she actually had decent promotion. After all, she did have her own special segment on MTV and commercials for her album. Not many newcomers are lucky enough to get those. I think her lack of success was that she didn't have a single that appealed to a broad genre of audiences, something a lot of other newcomers were able to get lucky with.
