Sirenia never did seem to have the vocals that we are so used to in gothic metal. They've always seemed to have a preference for the 'lighter' vocals, unlike those that we see in After Forever or even Tristania. I found it hard to believe, at first, because I was so used to Ailyn's old material. But, in her recent albums, she's made it pretty clear that she likes gothic metal and rock, as well as Jpop. She's covered Nightwish and Evanescence a few times, and she's taken on a much darker appearance.
Given that, and how much I like Ailyn and her music, I really try not to judge her based on her Jpop music. I really like the idea of her being a part of Sirenia. I'm really excited to hear how she will match up with Morten, and take on the 'beauty and the beast' style vocals. She has a really sweet voice.
It seems like a lot of bands are taking on new singers. Tristania, Nightwish, Sirenia.. And a lot of bands are opting for singers with the 'lighter' vocal style. Anette Olzon from Nightwish is very unike Tarja in many ways. Her voice, her image, everything. But she still (in my opinion, of course) manages to pull it off very well.
I know a lot of people probably aren't thrilled by the fact that Sirenia took on a pop singer, but at least they took one on with rock and metal influences and interests, and didn't take on someone like.. Britney Spears, dare I say. It could get a lot poppier!
