Well, breastfeeding is very important. It has been proven scientifically. Breastfeeding is the natural and best thing to do. It prevents several diseases in the infants, even allergies and some mental illnesses in the future years. The main consensus nowadays is that breastfeeding should be 100% exclusive (with no additional foods or anything else) for 6 months (at the least, 4 months). I'm not sure how old you are (since in the past there was this silly knowledge that was spreaded even by doctors that there was better options than breastfeeding, and I believe even my mother fell to it, but which became completely bogus nowadays), but, if any mother in 2008 is not breastfeeding their child and instead is giving them other stuff during their first 6 months, and they have no disease like HIV infection or any problem in which breastfeeding should be avoided, they are either irresponsible or they are unaware of the risks they might put their babies for doing otherwise. That thing is so importaqnt that in Brazil, we have a law that ensure the mother has a license and can't resume work for the first 4 months after delivery, in order to ensure that the mother will be available to breastfeed their child exclusively in that period. It's no joke: since hitomi is going to have a kid, I wish the best for her and her baby, and that she'll be careful in that aspect.
Eh, I'm 21. Siblings are a year older and a year younger and I think we turned out as fine as could be, considering we had formula. Maybe moms here in America are getting totally different information? Which is worrisome.... though I readily admit to not being well-versed in modern baby/mom lore, as I d on't intend on having kids in the near future or at all if I can have my way. Besides, if you're of a, ah... less-than-ample bust size even after giving birth I don't see how it's possible to do that for your kid, anyway. (I'm kidding, btw)

.... Yay for hitomi D:!
