I don't understand why they used a woman in place of a man ether... is Ayu following Katy Perry's "I Kissed a girl" and Beyonce's "If I were a boy" trend or something? Other than that, it was beautiful, Ayu looked gorgeous in the white dress

I disagree. Remember she is playing a role of a showgirl/singer at a Shanghai Club, so her acting at the beginning has to be flirty, and feminine, and as well as a young wanted woman in the big city.
I think the main theme for this video is obviously gay/lesbian-oriented. I think it's another way for Ayu to say that she acknowledges her gay/lesbian fans to be open-minded enough to do a subtle video with this theme.
As well, as back in the late 40's, 50's, 60's sexuality was very hidden, but no doubt it was boiling behind close doors. Anyway, we have to be open-minded, and imaginative... to see this video in a different way, put yourself in that time frame of Shanghai, being a singer at a club who can't help who she falls in love with. Regardless of gender, it's more important how we feel towards that person.
Lovely video! the city view at the beginning was breath-taking, I'm a sucker for vintage things. I wanna visit Shanghai so badly, hehe.. so I can feel like I'm in a Wong Kar Wai movie.
