Well, your vocal chords are like any other muscle, you have to work them out.
Ayu does not sing properly, and that includes her vibrato. Her shorter & less emphasized vibratos from the "I am..." era and earlier were done properly, with her vocal chords... my guess is she went to a new vocal coach afterwards who taught her as though she were an opera singer, telling her to use her mouth. Opera singers sometimes use their mouths to emphasize their vibrato as a sort of supplement to their vocal chords' movements - it makes it easier to project the vibrato so everyone can hear it.
It's COMPLETELY unnecessary and improper for a pop musician to be doing it, and it over-emphasizes the vibrato to the point where you don't know which of the two distinct notes she's actually trying to hit. Vibrato shouldn't create two notes, it should be one note, with a slight vibration.
I think it sounds awful, and it turned me off to alot of tracks in 2002 and 2003 when she started doing it. I've gotten used to it over the years but sometimes (especially in lives) the sound & look of it still REALLY bothers me.
