Vocally, it's one of her better emoted songs in recent years. I think the song has what I will call the 'TO BE' effect. She's emoting a kind of subtle emotion. One that is rather hard to put in to words. From 'Life', I feel a sort of sadness, optimism, and humility resonating from her vocals. When the song ends, I'm not really sure how I feel overall. It's not a feeling of extreme happiness or sadness, but it's some kind of transcendental feeling.
The intro is friggin' siiiick. I don't think any of her songs have ever opened so bluntly and with such drive from the get go. I can think of a few others (MY ALL and SIGNAL, but none as great is 'Life'.
I always get the feeling that some people who don't like the song are just really spoiled by overproduced pop songs. Admittedly, 'Life' is way too raw for someone used to listening to extravagant and pompous arrangements.

I totally agree. I liked Life when MW came out, but i didn't really care about it.
I think the main problem is that MW overshadowed Life. We were all so crazy about it (and the 10th anniversary versions of YOU and Depend on you), that we didn't give a damn about the b-side XD lol.
But after some listens, i fell in love with it and its lyrics. It doesn't fit NEXT LEVEL at all, but it would've been such a good way to end an album imo.
Anyways, i'm glad to see i'm not the only one who loves this song, and i really hope she'll perform this song in the future.
