I think it really depends on the group. Not really the number of members. There are groups like Wonder Girls where everyone gets to shine on their own. While there's some groups like KARA where only 2 members really stand out.
I think it also depends on the type of fan you are. If you're just a casual listener, then of course only the ones that sings the most shine to you. Me, I've been following their news along with their TV appearances and so on for a long time. I'm a huge fan of SNSD and that's why I can tell who is who and know their different personalities. Only big fans know that Taeng is extremely dorky and hates people doing aegyo things, Yuri likes to do pranks on people, Sooyoung only thinks about eating and telling jokes, Sica has a "Sica-effect", Fany is a true American girl since she loves "Gossip Girl" and "Twilight"... With time, you really get to "know" each and every members, and they all stand out on their own.
