Interesting discussion above. Personally, these days I think singles and albums are really just promotional tools for the real major moneymakers in an artist's repertoire: the concerts. Sure, they contain an artist's material, but the concert tour is the bread and butter.

I remember a TLC interview wherein they said that they earned 10 cents for every album sold. I think that shows the reality of how musical artists actually make a living and where the bulk of their fortune really comes from: fees for media appearances, commercial sponsorships, concerts, and royalties. Singles and albums are important for establishing an artist's fan base in his or her career, but for someone who's been around as long as Ayu they become less significant over time (the artist instead banks on his or her reputation), unless someone is attempting a comeback, of course.
