I think one of the reasons why is because being a singer/musicican/idol in japan is like the dream everyone dreams, sorta like how little girls want to be ballerinas.
In the west is more like (and this is what I've observed from behind the music) person is born into impoverish circumstances. Persons sells drugs. Person gets shot. Person has 3 kids with no money. Person decides to become a rapper so they don't have to sells drugs and get shot and so they can have all the bling and is too lazy/stupid and has no skills and is unpleasant to be around so they can't get a job at Walmart like the rest of us. Person posts music on myspace. Person becomes famous and makes money and all the bling. The end.
