Usually people buy multiple versions because they're collectors, interested in the different first press prizes, because there's a lot they love, they want to support the artist as much as possible, etc.
With this in mind, artists release multiple purchases so it increases the sales of the album/single or other form of media.
I don't always buy multiple versions of the singles; I don't entirely see the point. If there's two then MAYBE I'll buy both, but not when there's four or even five. Also, it's rare I buy numerous versions of singles at all; of albums if there's a Limited Edition and a Regular Edition then I most likely buy both.
