the ipod ones feel monotone to me. If you try other headphone and then use back your ipod headphone, you can feel the difference in the quality. these are some of the affordable brands that have better quality then ipod's:
creative(cheapest but good)
sony
philips
skull candy

i'm very sensitive to quality and such, years ago i have a attachment at the local TV station, my job requrie me to listen to different types of music and recording, so i'm used to the quality headphones. Ipod's just dissappoint me.
