Yeah, when I became Ayus' fan on 2005, I was just 11 years old. I didn't know any places to talk or follow news about Ayumi, neither in Finnish or English [until I found Divine Ayu where I could follow the news at least.] and thus, didn't even have any access to song leaks etc. until June 2009!
So basically, all the albums were a whole new experience to me, old or new. It felt amazing! Every piece of music was a whole new surprise. I couldn't buy any Ayu albums online until NL era, which is my first ever Ayu album bought at somewhat "close to Japanese original release" [June 2009]
Older Ayu releases are either bought from Blippo during 2005~2009 [Finnish Ani/Manga store, I bought A Best, My Story and GUILTY from there] or much later from different stores like Play-asia, Yesasia etc. and Ebay [November 2009~July 2010 I completed my main album collection on July :3]
Actually, I'm quite new in the whole Ayu forum thing too. I didn't even know about AHS or Ayu Moments until RNC was released!
And oh, speaking about the older releases, I had heard some random songs from her older releases, but didn't heard the whole albums until I got them~ [that was my rule ;3] It was amazing experience too! I had heard Secret and (miss)understood fully during my first years as Ayu fan, but didn't really like 'em. Now I love them!~
The mistake I made with NL, and only NL was just like you told: I happened to find the songs from Youtube and couldn't resist. When the album came, I enjoyed it really much however. But I could have enjoyed it a lot more, if it would have been like it is now, or with RNC or with those albums which are pre-(miss)understood.
If you just can, I recommend to at least try this method. If you are patient enough I can tell you that when you get the album, it will feel much more exciting and important and listening to the album will be even more enjoyful!
