Yea, I wouldn't read along on the first listen because you can't absorb the overall sound so easily.
I don't think her older albums pre-NEXT LEVEL had these overarching themes? (Did they?)

It seems like "Like A Doll" is the "Don't Look Back" in this album, at least as far as how the music style is different and catching.
