I myself was on my way home from work when it happened and was one of the millions that found themselves with no way home yesterday, so I walked home for 6 hours. (very tired today) I lived in California for 7 years and never felt an earthquake like this one. In Tokyo, it lasted for at least 3 minutes and was the strongest I have felt before, so I can only imagine what it must have been like in the Northern part of Japan. In Tokyo, it was scary but ultimately not life threatening.
Luckily (well I hate to use the word lucky) but the most effected regions of Japan are pretty rural areas, but definitely the death toll will be higher than 300 especially since I would say the majority of people living there are probably elderly and couldn't get out in time.
My boyfriend's hometown is Sendai and we just learned finally that his sister and nieces are all safe. Still waiting to hear from his friends in that area. Cell phones have been basically useless since the earthquake started. You can still access the net with them, which is how Ayu is able to do Twitter, but even now I can't make any calls.

I'm glad that you and your boyfriend's family are ok!
