Record of the Year is for the nature of the recording--production and sound, overall. Song of the Year is strictly for lyrics and melody.

As for the nominees, I'm a bit surprised at all the nods to Bruno Mars, yes, but I guess it was just a matter of good timing. I doubt he'll win any of the Big Three and it seems as if the 54th GRAMMY Awards Ceremony is shaping up to be The Adele Show. But, all the other nominees considered, I wouldn't mind that so much. I'm thinking I might be down for Bon Iver and Mumford & Sons, but Katy Perry is a total waste of a nomination, in my opinion.

Also, I really enjoy Gaga for the most part, but Born This Way has no business being nominated for Album of the Year. The single itself probably deserved a Record of the Year nomination, since the production for that record was phenomenal. Song of the Year would be blasphemous since the lyrics to that song are atrocious. But the sound? Totally worth a Record of the Year nod. The album as a whole? Too eclectic and unoriginal in sound/lyrically cliche in comparison with its predecessor, The Fame Monster, to be equated with an Album of the Year nomination.
