Well, I think the issue with Meisa is that she's very Western-influenced and also too beautiful.
The Japanese populace likes a certain type of female entertainer: one who is girlish, pretty, and innocent and who sings bittersweet songs about growing up or falling in/out of love. Meisa doesn't sing those type of songs and she certainly doesn't look very girlish - on the contrary, she looks very womanly - so those two things, I think, work against her having major success in Japan.
And, personally, I'm fine with that. Meisa's doing what she wants and it is connecting with an audience so she can't really be considered a failure in that respect.
