I know that calling someone a "psycho" is insulting. The thing is that the sentence structure actually points towards the "psycho" and the "lost love" not being the same person. You wouldn't call someone your "lost love"(that one is clearly Ayumi with their recent divorce) and then a "psycho" in the very next line, would you? If you are going to call someone a psycho you won't admit you loved that person until recently. He is not saying "I was with a psycho", he is saying "I was in a loving relationship for a short time, it's better than being in a bad relationship for a long time" Of course my interpretation doesn't have to be correct either, but to me it says "I have been in love, it's over now, but it was a great, albeit short, relationship. Better than a long one with someone you don't love." and that's the point, it can mean that, too. What if that's what he meant?
