I didn't find her smiling scenes contrived looking at all. Often times I would agree with you that a video with nothing going on can be quite boring. But NOT if it is shot well, which this video is. The framing, cinematography, lighting, etc is all top notch. The song also is very laid back, so having more going on would probably be overkill imo.
I am also one of those people that thinks Daybreak is a great video.
