It really depends on the religious beliefs of the departed and his or her family, but actually pretty often a friend with musical talent will perform a song that they liked or a goodbye song of some kind. Ayumi wasn't just a big star performing at Shinoda-san's funeral, she was a friend and former co-worker, so it actually made alot of sense for her to sing there.
