SGcafe managed to get an exclusive interview with the bubbly idol, host, and singer Nakagawa Shoko, who was in town for her Nakagawa Shoko Asia Tour in Singapore.

Welcome back to Singapore! The last time you performed here in Singapore, it was at AFA09, so how does it feel to be back here again?

It’s great to be back again! The last time I was here, the fans were all very spontaneous and supportive. Unlike the last time where I actually had a fun time performing with Ichirou Mizuki, it will be a solo for me this time round so I’m a bit worried. However, Ichirou Mizuki did give me some words of encouragement so it should be fine.

Seems like you have gotten into a collaboration with DECO*27 for the song “Ama Yadori” recently. How is it like working with them and what are your feelings toward the song?

DECO*27 is popular online especially on nicovideo, and it was a great experience to work with him. Our music background is somewhat different so I was nervous about how it would turn out. I usually do more rock but DECO*27 style is more cute. It turned out well in the end and it was refreshing to sing a cute, gentle love song. I’m happy that people can view the PV online. This song is found in DECO*27’s latest release “Love Calendar” .

It has been quite a while since your last album release and seems like you will be releasing your next album, “nsum”, later this month. Tell us more about this album, your thoughts and processes about this new release.

It is new mini-album titled “nsum ~Nakagawa Shoko ga Utatte Mita!~” which will feature song collaborations with various popular internet and Vocaloid producers like DECO*27, sasakure.UK, Hachioji P, kz(livetune) and Hyadain. The release comes in two editions and will be released August 15th; the limited edition come with a bonus DVD with music video and off-shoot footage for track “Uchou de Proposal”.

This release is to commemorate my 10th anniversary and the start of a new decade. I wanted to do something different from the previous album releases and so the new album features some interesting approaches. It may actually surprise some of the present fans since it is more of the cutesy type. The jacket illustration is done by Kishida Mel. Generally the whole theme was to portray myself as a vocaloid and go back to more of the 80s idol pop songs. Hopefully I can reach out to new fans out there with this new release.

You recently starred in the new Pokemon Movie voicing as Keldeo. Could you share with us more about the character and how it was like to get into the role?

This is the 15th anniversary for Pokemon and being a fan ever since I was a kid, it was a great pleasure to play a role in the movie. I had a bit of pressure playing the role of Keldeo as I wanted to do my best. The fight scenes were difficult and I had to practice making fighting noises at home. For example I would “HNG!” when I open the door. I’m glad to be able to leave a mark in Pokemon History by playing this role!

Being a presenter of Pokémon Sunday, you must like Pokemon a lot too. Can you share with us if you have any favourite Pokemon?

It’s been about 6 years already and I’ve even battle school girls (via Pokemon battles) and such. I love Pokemon a lot and my favourite Pokemon would be… Weavile! And also Keldeo.

More about yourself; so what got you into music and performance?

I’ve always wanted to sing Anisong and to perform for an anime. I would sing to myself in front of the PC and wanted to have the courage to perform in front of people.

What is your source of inspiration and motivation throughout your years as an idol, model and singer?

From my hobbies such as mangas, games and the internet. I would illustrate things and post online and receive critiques and comments to improve.

You have been to several countries outside of Japan to perform. Do you feel if there are any differences between fans in Japan and fans of other countries?

The fans all over the world are very spontaneous and sporting. The Hong Kong crowd are a really fun group as they would sing together alongside and cheer but Taiwan was proabaly the most craziest bunch of lot that I’ve experienced. The audience from Beijing get really fired up when I start to sing Saint Seiya’s theme song. I feel that there isn’t any difference between each country when they are hyped up during the “live”.

You have hosted numerous TV programs in Japan catered for otaku. Do you think that there will be a chance that these programs can reach out to your international fans one day?

Right now I’m studying Mandarin so I guess it might take some time for me to be able to really communicate to the fans out of Japan. I really hope that someday that dream of being able to reach out to the international fans would come true some day.

Your latest photobook, Shoko Remikannu 2, have you in various locations and costumes. If you were to have a photoshoot outside of Japan for your next photobook, where will be your ideal location and what costumes will you bring? Any particular anime characters you hope to cosplay in your photobook?

I would love to have a photobook where I can take pictures during my concert. I want to take pictures with all the fans and otaku out there, and I feel it will be great to have something like that. Also, many of my fans and attendees cosplay in many various costumes, and seeing them having fun makes me want to try it out with them too sometimes.

We thoroughly enjoyed Shoko-tan’s time with us in this interview, and she even asked us which language should she speak at tomorrow’s live concert. We look forward to enjoying her “live” tomorrow at Kallang Theatre!
