I guess because tattoos are still quite taboo in Japan, more so than in the West. Or at least they were at the time. I think most people know about Ayu's tattoos now. Although, I remember during the time she was married to Mannie she was tweeting about getting a tattoo/updating a tattoo, and someone tweeted back "No, Ayu! Don't get tattoos!", but at that point I thought it was common knowledge that she had them. I guess not.
