The entire point of a metaphor, simile, symbol or chiffre is taking aspects from an, usually otherwise unrelated, area to emphasize something in the piece. Ayumi uses her crosses as symbols, therefore the performances themselves not being religious is perfectly valid and even an artistically good choice.
