In comparison I could say this as JUST as awkward as when Dita Von Teese dressed up as the stereotypical "dragon lady" for one of her performances. People weren't sure if she was glamourising the stereotypical and offensive sexualising of Chinese women, or if she was just in character (and thus, well, showing how stupid that is). The whole thing was pretty over the top so I really doubt it was played straight.
