I love squeaky Ayu from 2001, like many other, but that doesn't mean Ayu had a great vocal technique back then... A lot of people actually would say the girl just can't sing.
This, so much. There is a big difference between "artist xyz has good vocal technique" and "I like artist xyz's vocals" - in the same way that "I like song xyz" and "song xyz is good" are not the same.
Utada's vocal technique is one of the most awful in the entire Pop business, she has a beautiful, beautiful tone(one of my personal favorite voices, actually), but her technique is plain bad and damaging - she can't sing. Her voice is beautiful, but she just can't sing well.
