I feel like this a lot of the time about her recent music. I don't know what any of them are doing. But I don't actually think of it as sad, from an artistic point of view...it's kind of the opposite for me.
For example, I like a lot of -big- artists, that are anything but artistic in the way that I see Ayu, like Rihanna, Namie, Koda, etc. But their songs are ridiculously well made a lot of the time.
I expect that from Ayu, AND I expect her to imbue her music with herself at the level that other -artists- do. Because I feel like for her entire career, she was able to do this, and produce top notch songs.
I also don't think that she ever really set trends. She was always trendy. If you listen to artists releasing around her, you can see that. But I do think that she always had a knack (apart from maybe a song for xx) for making her music seem
timeless.
I don't think some of these songs will be timeless in the future. And I can also see how people can attach value to that, and they might say, these songs aren't as good.
But personally, I like trendy music, so, I don't always base value on it.
