Ayu out of sight = Ayu out of mind and no matter how good the album is it won't be a chart topper without some visibility to the Japanese public.
Sure it's unfortunate for us to realise that as Ayu's fans who have followed her releases but your average Joe-san on the street doesn't have the time to spend on an untested product.
There's probably hundreds if not thousands of artists in Japan right now showing immense personal development in their works and we don't see or care about discovering them. Same goes for Ayu...
