Well I see Free & Easy as Ayu and HAL creating a more mature, refined and fully realized version of what they were going for with M. Like at their core their very similar songs in their composing (the slowing rising key changes) and the conjuring of something feeling like its rising before it explodes into epicness. When you look at the songs in their greater picture of J-pop, M was very influential and alot of copies came after it-but I see Free & Easy as the best version of that kind of distinctive pop song.
