If so, how did you get a hold of the Japanese syllabaries?

When I arrived in Tokyo I was curious as well to know how the fans did the amazing uchiwas. And then I googled and discovered a store in Harajuku focused only on stickers and other stuff to decorate uchiwas haha I bought everything from this store, from the uchiwa to the stickers. It's organized by roman alphabet and also japanese alphabet. Each letter is a sticker. While I was looking for the letters I was creating a layout in my head and putting the letters on top of the uchiwa to see if the phrase would fit and etc. It was super expensive tho!

And then I discovered that there was letters in Daiso (as Corvina told us). I was really pissed because Daiso is so cheap. haha
Funny story: I was going to Ayu's concert by subway with the uchiwa inside a plastic bag. I was sitting there and I saw a few girls using bags from old Ayu's concerts and I get so excited to see others fans. And then, they looked to my plastic bag and they saw the uchiwa and get super happy and started pointing at me lol It was fun.
