200-300 would be good for solos nowadays, yes.
But that's exactly the point.
The market is not interested in more, even for popular artists.
To achieve more, there has to happen something extraordinary like a retirement. And that's really sad for the market.
Cause at the same time the huge physical selling power we still had about 10 years ago just didn't shift to digital sales. Digital sales aren't that high in numbers as well. It got lost somehow.
I very well got that. It still does not make a change. What do you expect? A single to sell 7million again? that will never happen and it does not have to do with lost interest in solo acts. AKB48 sales do not reflect their general popularity or the interest in their sales - three out of four sold CDs are bought just for the collectors card. 300k is so much if you compare it to albums that sell world wide. It just still that amount in Japan and there is still a download market/illegal download market that is bigger as you think and that you do not take into account.
I actually don't know why I argue with you on that - I just don't think it is as bad as you make it to be. And moreover I think it is a great feat to achieve such an high number....regardless on the factors that surround it. _genic sold very well despite not having any single and her tours that got longer and longer reflect her popularity way more than her physical sales. Same goes for other acts like Kumi for example.
