1) it was a publicity stunt to milk sympathy from the public, people love/admire a tragic hero.
2) To give an excuse to pull the plug at any point. She could post on TA tomorrow "I've gone completely deaf and have decided to retire. Thanks and goodbye."
What? Illness isn't all or nothing. Just because she has vertigo (had she actually said this?) doesn't mean she can't live her life and do her job. I'm sure she is on treatment to monitor it.
