Cranes and (Eastern) phoenixes are both part of Japanese culture and mythology and they were both used in the original JAPONESQUE tour pamphlet.
The original logo for the tour was simply a pair of wings.
Guess they chose a phoenix to link both the East and the West together to fit the theme.
The Black Cherry one is more interesting.
