Perhaps because it's a player. MD Players have no recording function, and because of that they are slimmer and lighter (like the one I own).
If you don't have other means of recording, don't bother thinking about getting that model then. There are two basic types of MD Portable players (excluding Net MDs here), non-recordable and recordable ones. It sounds like you need the latter.
If you ask then why make the non-recordable ones? Well, people might have a MD/CD Hi-Fi to record, or they just want a new player and they already have an old one that can record.
