If you don't have other means of recording, don't bother thinking about getting that model then. There are two basic types of MD Portable players (excluding Net MDs here), non-recordable and recordable ones. It sounds like you need the latter.
If you ask then why make the non-recordable ones? Well, people might have a MD/CD Hi-Fi to record, or they just want a new player and they already have an old one that can record.

That's right. The MJ57 is a player only even though the speaker technology that comes with it is awesome sounding in my opinion, plus it looks so cool ^^.

You would either need an MD Recorder/Player or get a Hifi with MD recorder function. That way you record music on the hifi from CD and then just use the newly recorded MDs on the player
